Verify every value against its source
The review queue is where your team stays in control: extracted fields beside the original document, with nothing sent anywhere until someone approves.
What does a reviewer see?
A list of each client's documents, with their type and status, and for the selected document the extracted fields, such as wages and withholding on a W-2, beside the source image or PDF. Reviewers move through documents the way they would through a stack of paper, without retyping a number.
Why require human review before data moves on?
AI extraction can misread a blurry photo, a handwritten correction or an unusual layout. A professional who knows the client is the right check. Requiring approval means the review step is built into the workflow rather than left to habit. Our guide to AI in tax practice explains why we think a human must stay in the loop.
A suggested review routine
- Confirm the document type and the taxpayer or recipient it belongs to.
- Check identifying fields (names, EINs, account numbers) against the source.
- Check dollar amounts box by box, paying extra attention to photos and multi-page statements.
- Note anything that needs a client follow-up before approving.
- Approve, then move to the next document.
What happens after approval?
Approved work stays with the client record. With the Canopy integration (in pilot testing), a person can approve a status note to post back to the client in Canopy. Exports for Lacerte, UltraTax CS and Drake are coming soon. Until then, your preparers continue the return in your software as usual.
Spend this tax season reviewing, not retyping.
